What do you do?

A: What do you do?
B: I'm a teacher. 

One of the first questions that people will ask when they meet you is What do you do? They are not asking you what you’re doing. They’re asking you about your work. What do you do = What is your job?

It’s short for “What do you do for a living?”

What do you do?

I’m a Software Engineer. I’m a teacher. I'm a doctor. I'm still in school. 

Even if you don’t have a job, you can answer. I’m a student. I’m retired. I’m between jobs (I’m between jobs is another way to say you are unemployed. Or you could say, I’m looking for work

I’m a student at the university and I’m a server. (In the US, we call waiters and waitresses servers. By the way, the guy in the kitchen is not a cooker. That’s a cook.
